This antique c1840 Micro Mosaic brooch / pin depicts a masterfully rendered central scene of three white doves in flight, for peace and love. The elaborate outer borders depict white tulips and daisies. It looks like this piece was converted from a buckle: there is a small rectangular protrusion at the bottom of the piece that was likely once where the buckle catch was located. The conversion was very well executed, and this piece makes sense as a brooch / pin. Very effective and the unusual design and magnificent mosaic work make this a conversation piece and collector’s dream! Has a very “Celtic” look about it. The colors of the brooch are red, turquoise / blue and white. The overall dimensions are: 49mm (north to south) x 56mm (east to west) x approx. 8mm (depth excluding clasp). The setting is vermeil silver (unmarked), i. The clasp is in good working order. The brooch is in overall excellent condition with minor wear requisite with its age. There are about seven to eight tesserae missing from the micro mosiac in aggregate: less than 1% of the total coverage. Please see photos for more details for missing tesserae, look specifically at: (1) top red border of the rectangular “bar” at the bottom of the brooch – three tesserae missing, (2) top of the wing to right of the top dove (one tesserae missing), (3) around the belly area of the dove at lower right (three to four tesserae missing). The mosaic workmanship if of the highest quality. A general note on Victorian Micro Mosaic brooches / pins: they were hugely popular in the mid 1800s, acquired principally in Italy by travelers on the “Grand Tour”. Such pieces often depict scenes of the Colosseum, Forum and other Roman ruins (as they were at the time), St. Peter’s Square and so forth. The quality of the materials and workmanship varied widely. I have handled MANY, and this one is superb in terms of workmanship. I do not therefore think this was a “souvenir” per se, but rather a personal item made to order. As this skill resided in Italy, this is where the piece was likely commissioned. It is highly collectible.
