It is a hand painted duck in flight that is quite large. The book “The Art of Gaman” shows some of the craft items that were created in the Japanese internment camps during the 1940s. I read that there was a bird crafting class, shell assemblage, painting class and they made other carved wooden pieces. This example was heavily lacquered, on its reverse there are a few spots where the artist did not fully cover the entire surface- Robin’s egg blue paint shows thru. On the left wing, a tiny chip shows the original white trim paint under the lacquer. This example has a distinct Pacific Northwest look with old lacquer that has yellowed with age with and open “c-clasp”.
